Prior to the 2015/2016 academic year, children were expected to attain Level 2 by the end of Year 2.

This was categorised into 3 sub levels:

  • Level 2c represented attainment at the lower end of the average range

  • Level 2b represented attainment at the middle of the average range.

  • Level 2a represented attainment at the higher end of the average range.

  • Level 3 represented well above average attainment.

From 2015/16 onwards, levels have been removed and in their place is a national ‘expected standard’ for Year 2 children to meet. This standard is met by achieving all or most statements in a set of attainment descriptors called the ‘Interim Framework for Assessment.’
